Commodore’s Message
This is my last monthly message to the South Whidbey Yacht Club, and it has been an honor to serve the Club as your Commodore for the past two years. The Covid-19 pandemic certainly changed things and has challenged all of us individually and collectively as members of SWYC. All activities came to an abrupt halt with the onset of the pandemic, but thanks to Perry Lovelace’s (and others) initiative, we were able to resume our Board and General Membership meetings virtually. Other than these, we were unable to have most of our usual activities in 2020. Rear Commodore Katy Shaner did a great job scheduling interesting presenters for our monthly meetings via Zoom, and many of our members took advantage of these virtual meetings. The Windward Women have become more organized and are meeting via Zoom on a regular basis, and the Kayaking group led by Katy has continued to be active and to grow and bring in new members to the Club. In 2021 with the arrival of the vaccines and a decrease in the number of Covid cases, the Club has been able to return to some of our usual activities. The YSA had very successful Youth and Adult Learn to Sail Programs thanks all of the hard work and dedication of all of those involved in organizing the programs led by Bob Rodgers as YSA President, Bob Boehm YSA Secretary, and Barb Grimlund YSA Treasurer. Some of the sailors also had a successful racing season. We did have a great Crab Fest in July and resumed in-person/virtual (hybrid) General Membership meetings in September. Thanks to the support of the Board, Vice Commodore Pete Grimlund has now procured all of the audiovisual equipment to continue these hybrid meetings even after the pandemic to allow maximum member participation, especially those who are away from the Island for a significant portion of the year.
Over the past two years, your Board has done a great job managing all of the necessary activities to keep the Club running smoothly. Please join me in thanking all of the current SWYC Officers and Board members for their support, hard work and dedication: Vice Commodore Pete Grimlund, Rear Commodore Katy Shaner, Secretary Patty Maxfield, Treasurer Barb Grimlund, Membership Chair Kathy Rodgers, and Board Members-at-Large Martha Ford, Starke Scott, John Gibson, and Dan Mooney. Thanks also to Commodore Emeritus Deb Richardson for her sage advice and for assisting Kathy Rodgers with her duties as Membership Chair. I would also like to thank the following members for their service to the Club during portions of the last two years: Bob Boehm as Vice Commodore and Jill Brown and Michael Scott as Board Members-at-Large.
I hope all of you will join us on Saturday, November 13 for our Virtual Commodore’s Ball and Changing of the Watch as we welcome all of the incoming Officers and Board Members for 2022. Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Commodore for the past two years.
